For admins
Performance data from Oracle Eloqua
Better Email can show how an email it synced performs once Eloqua sends it: sends, deliveries, opens, clicks, bounces, unsubscribes and clicks per link. The numbers appear on the Campaign's Performance tab and in the Campaign list, next to the email you built.
This guide covers how to switch it on. It assumes you have already set up the Oracle Eloqua integration.
For what the finished result looks like and how to read it, see Campaign performance.
Your contact data stays in Eloqua
Better Email never receives, processes, or stores contact-level data. No email addresses, no contact IDs, no per-recipient activity.
Better Email reads Eloqua's reporting totals for each email. For clicks per link, Eloqua groups the clicks by link before it answers, so no contact ID comes back. Better Email stores each link's address with only the utm_ tags from Link Tagging, and drops the rest of the query string, since Eloqua's tracking parameters and merged values there can identify who clicked.
What you need
- An Eloqua Analyzer licence on the Better Email user. The numbers come from Eloqua's reporting, which needs that licence.
- A production instance. Eloqua sandboxes don't have the reporting data, so performance data doesn't work there. Syncing Campaigns to a sandbox works as usual.
Enable performance data in Better Email
- Open your Eloqua integration in Better Email.
- Turn on
Sync performance data. - Click Save.
Better Email refreshes performance data about once an hour.
If Sync performance data isn't on the integration, performance data isn't switched on for your workspace yet. Contact us to enable it.
How emails are matched
Better Email reads the numbers of the exact emails it created, by their Eloqua ID. Renaming an email or moving it to another folder in Eloqua doesn't break the link. An email built in Eloqua, or a copy of a synced one, isn't tracked.
If several Eloqua campaigns send the same email, Better Email shows their numbers added together.
Better Email only reads emails in the instance the integration points at now. After you change its Company name to another instance, emails synced to the old one stop updating.
Good to know
- No engagement timeline. Better Email reads Eloqua's totals for each email, so an Eloqua Campaign's Performance tab has no engagement chart. The top clicked links and the click map work.
- Every synced email keeps refreshing, not only recent sends, so Better Email still counts opens and clicks that arrive weeks later.
- Each hourly refresh reads up to 40 emails and works through the rest in turn. With many synced Campaigns, some update every few hours rather than every hour.
- A deleted email keeps the numbers Better Email last read.
Troubleshooting
No performance data at all. Check that Sync performance data is on and the integration is enabled. Check in Eloqua that the Better Email user has an Analyzer licence and that the integration points at a production instance, not a sandbox.
A sent Campaign shows no performance. Eloqua probably sent a copy of the email, or an email built in Eloqua. Send the email Better Email synced. See How emails are matched.
Numbers differ slightly from Eloqua's own reports. Opens and clicks keep arriving after a send, and the two systems refresh at different moments. Better Email refreshes hourly.
