Email emoji compatibility 2026: safe emojis for subject lines

ยท 5 min read

Email emoji compatibility guide for 2026

We tested emojis across 17 email clients, including Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo, iCloud Mail, native iPhone mail, and Android apps. This guide shows which emojis are safe to use in email subject lines and campaigns, and which ones may appear as empty boxes or broken character sequences.

For 2026, two more smileys are safe across every environment we compared: ๐Ÿ˜Œ Relieved Face and โ˜น๏ธ Frowning Face. The complete list below contains familiar emojis with proven support. The newest Unicode 17.0 and Unicode 18.0 additions are not safe for email yet.

Not safe for email yetThe emoji appeared incorrectly or did not render in the environments we comparedThe newest Unicode 17.0 and Unicode 18.0 emojis

Use an emoji to add tone, not to carry essential meaning. Your subject line and message should still make sense if the symbol is missing or looks different on the recipient's device.

Newly supported in 2026โ€‹

๐Ÿ˜Œ Relieved Face

โ˜น๏ธ Frowning Face

Both emojis displayed correctly in every tested email client and have now been added to Better Email's emoji picker.

How emojis look across email clientsโ€‹

Emoji support depends on both the operating system and the email client. We distinguish between Outlook, Apple devices, and Google and Android devices when testing.

Outlook mood emojisโ€‹

Outlook Emojis

Outlook has the most inconsistent emoji support, which is why every addition is tested before it appears in Better Email.

Apple device mood emojisโ€‹

Apple Emojis

Apple devices generally have broad emoji support, but support can still vary with the operating system version.

Google and Android mood emojisโ€‹

Google emojis

Google and Android support also depends on the browser, app, and operating system version.

For the 2026 update, ๐Ÿ˜Œ Relieved Face and โ˜น๏ธ Frowning Face displayed correctly across every environment we compared. They are therefore the only new additions to this safe emoji list.

Do emojis work in email subject lines?โ€‹

Yes, established emojis generally work in subject lines, but they do not look identical everywhere. The recipient's operating system supplies the artwork, so the same emoji can have a different style on Windows, macOS, iPhone, and Android.

Place the emoji beside meaningful words rather than using it as a replacement for them. New or complex emoji sequences carry the greatest rendering risk.

Which emojis work in Outlook?โ€‹

Outlook has the most inconsistent support in our testing. Older, single character emojis are the safest choice. Recently released emojis and sequences made from multiple characters can appear as an empty box, a monochrome symbol, or several separate characters.

If Outlook is important for your audience, choose from the safe list above and test the complete subject line before sending.

Do emojis affect email deliverability?โ€‹

An emoji does not automatically send an email to spam. Deliverability depends on the sender's reputation, authentication, list quality, content, and recipient engagement. Excessive or misleading symbols can still make a subject line look promotional or reduce trust, so use them sparingly and test them with your audience.

Are emojis accessible in email?โ€‹

Screen readers usually announce an emoji by its Unicode name. A long row of emojis can therefore become noisy and difficult to understand. Keep the important meaning in the text, use only a small number of relevant emojis, and avoid repeating decorative symbols.

Why do emojis look different across email clients?โ€‹

Unicode defines the character, but Apple, Google, Microsoft, and other vendors draw their own artwork. Support arrives through operating system, browser, and app updates. A newly released emoji can work on the sender's phone while appearing broken for a recipient who uses an older system or a different email client.

How we test email emoji compatibilityโ€‹

Our latest rendering test covered 17 email clients, including Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo, iCloud Mail, native iPhone mail, and Android apps. We grouped the detailed results into six representative environments and counted an emoji as safe only when it rendered as one recognizable symbol in every environment.

Fallback characters do not count as full support. Some emojis use a Zero Width Joiner to combine several characters. When a client does not support that sequence, it may display the pieces separately even though none of the characters is technically missing.

For the results behind newer and partially supported emojis, see our Unicode 17.0 email client test and our Unicode 18.0 email guide.
